Milan Loses 2027 Champions League Final Due to San Siro Uncertainty

Milan’s hopes of hosting the 2027 men’s Champions League final have been dashed due to uncertainties surrounding the future of the iconic San Siro stadium. UEFA, European football’s governing body, announced on Tuesday that they would not be assigning the final to Milan.

The decision stems from concerns over the potential impact of refurbishment works on the San Siro and its surrounding areas during the final’s timeframe. UEFA stated in a statement that the Municipality of Milan couldn’t provide assurances that the stadium and its vicinity wouldn’t be affected by ongoing renovations.

As a result, UEFA has decided to reopen the bidding process for a suitable venue to host the 2027 final. A decision is expected in May or June of 2025. The 2026 final is already set to take place in Budapest, Hungary.

Budapest and Milan were the only cities vying for the hosting rights of the 2026 and 2027 finals. The decision to pull Milan from the 2027 final is a significant setback for the Italian city, which has a rich footballing history and is eager to host major international sporting events. The uncertainty surrounding the San Siro’s renovation, however, has ultimately forced UEFA to look elsewhere for a suitable venue.
