Red Bull’s Race Strategy Head Joins McLaren as Sporting Director

In a significant move within Formula One, Red Bull’s Head of Race Strategy, Will Courtenay, is set to join championship rivals McLaren as their Sporting Director. This news comes after a string of high-profile departures from Red Bull, including star designer and former chief technical officer Adrian Newey, who recently joined Aston Martin as Managing Technical Partner.

Courtenay’s transition to McLaren marks the end of a 20-year tenure with Red Bull. He will report directly to McLaren’s Racing Director, Randeep Singh. While the exact timing of Courtenay’s move remains unclear, media reports suggest his Red Bull contract extends until mid-2026.

McLaren’s Team Principal, Andrea Stella, expressed enthusiasm about Courtenay’s addition, highlighting his experience, professionalism, and passion for motorsport. Stella believes Courtenay will be instrumental in strengthening their leadership team as they strive for race wins and championships.

This move comes at a crucial juncture for McLaren, who are currently trailing Red Bull by 41 points in the constructors’ standings with six races remaining, including the United States Grand Prix next month. Courtenay’s strategic expertise and understanding of Red Bull’s operations could prove valuable as McLaren seeks to close the gap in the championship.
