Iran has reportedly been mediating discussions between Russia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels regarding the potential sale of advanced Russian Yakhont missiles. The Houthis, a group supported by Iran, have been actively involved in attacks against ships in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade and posing a significant threat to international shipping. This potential arms deal raises concerns about the escalation of tensions in the region.
The Yakhont missiles, also known as P-800 Oniks, are anti-ship cruise missiles with a range of around 300 kilometers (186 miles). They can be launched from land, air, and submarines, making them a formidable weapon capable of targeting vessels at sea. While Russia has not yet made a decision regarding the sale of the missiles, reports suggest that the talks are ongoing.

For months, Ukraine has been pressing the United States to allow the use of long-range missiles like US ATACMS and British-French Storm Shadow for strikes deep inside Russia. The US has so far been hesitant to provide these weapons. A senior US official has suggested that the Russia-Houthi talks might be a response to the US’s posture on Ukraine’s requests for long-range weapons.
