Amtrak has appointed Byl Herrmann as its new Executive Vice President and General Counsel, a significant move for the company as it continues to shape the future of rail travel in the United States. Herrmann, who joined Amtrak’s Law Department in 1999, has a proven track record of success within the organization. His journey has spanned various roles of increasing responsibility, including a year as Vice President of Human Resources and, most recently, as Vice President, Senior Managing Deputy General Counsel, and Assistant Corporate Secretary.
In his new role, Herrmann will be responsible for leading the Law Department’s strategic vision, establishing key priorities, and overseeing the annual operating plan, all aligned with Amtrak’s broader goals. He will be instrumental in driving the company’s legal strategy and ensuring that it operates within a sound legal framework.
Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner expressed confidence in Herrmann’s abilities, stating, “Byl has helped guide the evolution of Amtrak’s Law department and corporate development over many decades and brings a comprehensive and deep knowledge of all facets of the company. He’s the right person to help lead the company forward as we build a new era of rail in the United States, building upon the strong legacy set by his predecessor, Eldie Acheson.”
Herrmann will take over from Eldie Acheson, who has served as Amtrak’s General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer, and Corporate Secretary since 2007. Acheson will continue with Amtrak in her roles as Corporate Secretary and Ethics Officer until January 2025, with Herrmann assuming those responsibilities in February 2025.
Herrmann’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Amtrak, as the company seeks to expand its services and modernize its infrastructure. His expertise and experience will be invaluable as Amtrak navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
