The highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 cult classic, *Beetlejuice*, titled *Beetlejuice Beetlejuice*, will see the return of original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. However, fans will be disappointed to learn that Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis will not be reprising their roles as Adam and Barbara Maitland.
Director Tim Burton explained the decision, revealing that the film will shift its focus to a new generation of the Deetz family. In an interview with *People*, Burton stated, “I didn’t want to just check boxes. In the first film, they were vital, but I wanted to focus on different things.”
Instead of Adam and Barbara, the sequel will center on Lydia Deetz, her mother Delia, and Lydia’s daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega. This multi-generational narrative will explore the complex dynamics between mother and daughter, grandmother and granddaughter, offering a fresh perspective on the original film.
Burton further explained the necessity of a time gap for the sequel, emphasizing that it needed to reflect the passage of time. “A sequel like this has to be about the time we are in now. It was drawn to this multigenerational story with the mother, the daughter, the grandmother, and that became the core of the piece. I don’t think we could have made it in 1989.”
