Electricians Share Insights on EV Charger Industry Challenges and Opportunities

A new report by FractalEV, a leading Canadian Level 2 EV charger manufacturer, dives deep into the electric vehicle (EV) charging industry from the perspective of those on the frontlines: electricians. Based on a survey of 438 North American electricians, the report reveals both the challenges and the optimism surrounding the future of EV infrastructure.

The survey unveils some key issues plaguing the industry. A significant 77% of electricians expressed frustration with EV charger installations, citing skill gaps, unexpected labor costs or extended time on the job (38%), and inadequate manufacturer support (35%) as major hurdles. Despite these challenges, a sense of optimism prevails. A majority (64%) of electricians are confident in their ability to assess EV charger quality, while acknowledging a learning curve for a portion (19%). Furthermore, the rising tide of EV charging is seen as a positive force, with 64% believing it has enhanced job security and created new employment opportunities. Looking ahead, 62% anticipate an increase in demand for qualified electricians within the next 5 to 10 years.

These findings emphasize the critical need for manufacturers to understand and address the practical challenges electricians encounter. User-friendly, reliable hardware, paired with comprehensive training and technical support, are essential to streamline installation, minimize errors, and improve overall satisfaction. Chris Mendes, CEO of FractalEV, emphasizes the company’s commitment to designing solutions with electricians in mind. “The insights in this report reaffirm our commitment to designing products and services with electricians in mind, ensuring that our solutions are not only innovative but also practical and easy to implement,” Mendes says. “We believe that by focusing on the needs of those who install and maintain our chargers, we can drive meaningful improvements in the industry and set a new standard for quality and reliability.”

This report serves as a roadmap for manufacturers to navigate the evolving EV charging landscape. By prioritizing the needs of electricians, the industry can foster trust, collaboration, and ultimately, a sustainable future for EV infrastructure. FractalEV, with its focus on user-friendly solutions and commitment to supporting electricians, aims to be a leader in this crucial endeavor.
