In a significant victory against racism in football, a fan who racially abused both Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr and Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze during separate matches at Mallorca last year has been found guilty and sentenced to a suspended prison term. The aggressor, whose identity was not disclosed in Real Madrid’s statement, received a 12-month sentence, suspended after expressing remorse through a letter of apology to both players and completing anti-discrimination training. As part of the sentence, he was also banned from attending any football matches for three years.
This conviction marks the third instance in recent months where individuals have been held accountable for racist insults directed at Real Madrid players. The club, in its statement, reaffirmed its commitment to combating racism and promoting inclusivity within the world of sports. “Real Madrid … will keep working to protect the club’s values and eradicate any racist behavior in the world of football and sport,” the club said.
The incidents involving Vinicius and Chukwueze both occurred at Mallorca’s Son Moix stadium, two weeks apart. During the Mallorca v Real Madrid match, video footage captured supporters making monkey chants towards the Brazilian forward, who has been a vocal critic of racism in Spanish football. In another incident, the same fan directed racist abuse towards Chukwueze during a Villarreal match.
In a separate case involving Real Madrid, a minor who racially insulted midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in April this year has also been held accountable for his actions. The youth expressed regret and was subsequently banned from stadiums for a year. He will also participate in educational programs organized by the prosecutor’s office and pay a fine.
These convictions demonstrate a growing effort to address the persistent issue of racism in football. While these incidents highlight a disturbing reality, the punishments levied against the offenders serve as a deterrent and signal a commitment to creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all players and fans.
