India’s Tourism Transformation: From Brand Ambassador to Global Champion

India’s tourism landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past decade, shifting from a reliance on brand ambassadors to a period marked by the emergence of a leader who embodies the very essence of ‘Incredible India’ on the global stage. This evolution signifies not just a change in perception but a tangible shift in India’s global tourism presence, driven by concrete initiatives and a visionary leader.

The Honorable Prime Minister champions a ‘Whole-of-Government’ approach to fostering comprehensive growth in tourism. This vision has translated into a flurry of infrastructure developments, including the creation of nearly 150,000 kilometers of new road networks, over 500 new air routes, and around 150 enhanced airports, alongside the introduction of high-speed Vande Bharat trains and the completion of nearly 100 tourism infrastructure projects. These initiatives have yielded impressive results: India recorded an astounding 250 crore domestic tourist visits in 2023, nearly double the 128 crore visits recorded in 2014.

The Prime Minister’s vision extends beyond infrastructure. He has ensured that the 60 destinations that hosted India’s G20 meetings gain global visibility under the Presidency, putting India’s diverse attractions on the world map. As a leader deeply connected with the people, he has launched the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ initiative, urging citizens to explore the beauty of their own country before venturing abroad. He consistently encourages the global Indian diaspora to act as ambassadors for ‘Incredible India,’ spreading awareness of the country’s rich cultural heritage among their international friends.

His personal visits to iconic locations such as Lakshadweep, Kaziranga, Kanyakumari, and Srinagar have sparked significant interest among both domestic and international tourists. Reflecting on the Prime Minister’s unwavering commitment to tourism, I recall his heartfelt words when he appointed me to the Tourism portfolio in his Cabinet: ‘I am giving you a piece of my heart.’ His words inspired me to develop a comprehensive business plan for the tourism sector in India, one that prioritizes the creation of new tourism destinations and leverages the rapid advancements in infrastructure.

From India’s independence in 1947 to 2014, there was no established model for developing a tourist destination from scratch in a holistic manner. This paradigm shifted in 2018 with the launch of Ekta Nagar and the Statue of Unity, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of Indian tourism. These projects demonstrate the government’s commitment to building world-class attractions that cater to both domestic and international tourists, showcasing India’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty to the world.
