The reigning Spanish and European champions, Real Madrid, are set to face a fiery test in their upcoming La Liga derby clash against city rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Ancelotti expressed confidence about the team’s progress, emphasizing the demanding schedule and their strong comeback after the break. “We’re getting better and it suits us because the schedule is very demanding,” Ancelotti said this week. “We’ve come back well after the break and we want to continue like this for Sunday’s game, which is going to be very tough.”
Real Madrid currently sits in second place, trailing leaders Barcelona by four points. The gap could widen to seven points by the time the derby kicks off, with Barcelona facing Osasuna on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Atletico comes into the match two points behind Real Madrid, fueled by a lucky late 1-0 win against Celta Vigo, secured by Julian Alvarez’s 90th-minute strike.
Alvarez, a versatile forward who can play upfront or in midfield, is expected to start after coming off the bench against Celta. “He’s a versatile player, he can play upfront, he can play (in midfield), he gives us more options,” Simeone said.
“The derby is a very important game… We have to prepare and think well about this match that will be important for what’s to come, and for the season,” added Alvarez, highlighting the significance of the upcoming match.
