Real Madrid Faces Atletico Madrid in a Spicy La Liga Derby Clash

The reigning Spanish and European champions, Real Madrid, are set to face a fiery test in their upcoming La Liga derby clash against city rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, as Real Madrid aims to avenge their previous defeats against Diego Simeone’s side.

Last season, the only two defeats suffered by Los Blancos were inflicted by Atletico, who will be hosting the game this weekend. Notably, Atletico was the last team to defeat Real Madrid in the top flight, a feat they accomplished just over a year ago. Since then, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have remained unbeaten in a remarkable 39 games.

The Rojiblancos also managed to eliminate Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey in January 2024 during the last 16, marking the only loss for Real Madrid in the entire calendar year.

Adding to the challenge, Real Madrid will be without their star summer signing, Kylian Mbappe, who is currently sidelined with a thigh injury sustained during their midweek victory over Alaves. Despite this setback, Real Madrid boasts a formidable attacking lineup with stars like Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, known for his exceptional form, and the dynamic midfielder Jude Bellingham, who could be deployed in a more attacking role.

Another promising option for Ancelotti is the young striker, Endrick, the Brazilian teenager who has impressed with his performances off the bench. The manager might also consider a strategic shift to a 4-4-2 formation, featuring Luka Modric as an extra midfielder, to counter Atletico’s threat.

After a slightly sluggish start to the campaign, Real Madrid has now won five consecutive matches across all competitions. Ancelotti expressed confidence about the team’s progress, emphasizing the demanding schedule and their strong comeback after the break. “We’re getting better and it suits us because the schedule is very demanding,” Ancelotti said this week. “We’ve come back well after the break and we want to continue like this for Sunday’s game, which is going to be very tough.”

Real Madrid currently sits in second place, trailing leaders Barcelona by four points. The gap could widen to seven points by the time the derby kicks off, with Barcelona facing Osasuna on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Atletico comes into the match two points behind Real Madrid, fueled by a lucky late 1-0 win against Celta Vigo, secured by Julian Alvarez’s 90th-minute strike.

Alvarez, a versatile forward who can play upfront or in midfield, is expected to start after coming off the bench against Celta. “He’s a versatile player, he can play upfront, he can play (in midfield), he gives us more options,” Simeone said.

“The derby is a very important game… We have to prepare and think well about this match that will be important for what’s to come, and for the season,” added Alvarez, highlighting the significance of the upcoming match. The derby is expected to be a tense and exciting battle, with both teams determined to secure a crucial victory.
