The United Nations recognizes tourism as a vital global economic driver, generating employment for one in ten people worldwide. This year’s World Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27th, emphasizes the sector’s immense international influence. Beyond its economic benefits, tourism shapes the social, political, and cultural landscapes of nations and regions.
India has long been a participant in World Tourism Day celebrations, showcasing its vibrant tourism sector. Uttar Pradesh, a state rich in cultural heritage and spiritual significance, is actively investing in enhancing its tourism infrastructure to accommodate the increasing influx of visitors. The state has witnessed a surge in tourists, exceeding 48 crore in recent years, attracted by its architectural marvels, renowned spiritual sites, and rich cultural tapestry.
Recognizing the potential of religious tourism, Uttar Pradesh is investing heavily in developing prominent Buddhist circuits, including Kapilvastu, Sarnath, Shravasti, Kaushambi, Sankisa, and Kushinagar. These circuits, which attracted nearly 13 crore visitors in 2023, are undergoing further development through public-private partnerships. The state’s tourism department is inviting private investors to contribute to the construction of hotels, resorts, convention centers, theme parks, museums, and meditation centers along these spiritual routes.
In addition to these Buddhist circuits, Uttar Pradesh is developing several other prominent tourism circuits, encompassing diverse themes like Ramayana, Krishna, Mahabharat, Shakti Peeth, Adhyatmik, Sufi, Jain, Bundelkhand, Craft, Swatantra Sangram, and Wildlife & Ecotourism. These initiatives aim to enrich the state’s cultural and spiritual tourism offerings, catering to a wide range of interests.
Uttar Pradesh’s tourism strategy emphasizes the preservation and adaptive reuse of its heritage properties. The state is transforming forts and palaces into branded hospitality venues, enhancing the visitor experience while safeguarding architectural landmarks. Three significant heritage sites – Chhatar Manzil in Lucknow, Baruasagar Fort in Jhansi, and Chunar Fort in Mirzapur – have been awarded to private developers for architectural conservation and conversion into heritage hotels.
Beyond these specific projects, Uttar Pradesh is implementing a comprehensive tourism policy launched in 2022. This investor-friendly policy, aimed at boosting the state’s economy, promotes private sector involvement in 33 tourism-related business categories. It simplifies business processes and ensures transparent subsidies through a digital application and disbursement portal.
As part of its commitment to responsible tourism, Uttar Pradesh is incorporating environmental and social sustainability into its development initiatives. This includes provisions for employment generation subsidies, the establishment of units for disabled individuals, the revival of rare art and culture, and subsidies for sewerage plants.
To further enhance accessibility, Uttar Pradesh is developing heliports at seven key tourist destinations under the public-private partnership model. This ensures convenient and efficient transport for visitors.
The state is also moving forward with the development of an integrated tourism zone in Kushinagar and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of India and Tata Sons Pvt Ltd to develop and maintain the Museum of Indian Temple Architecture in Ayodhya.
Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to tourism development is evident in its unwavering focus on infrastructure upgrades. The state is investing in modern amenities, including clean and hygienic facilities along major highways and district roads.
