London Gatwick Airport recently hosted its first-ever Innovation Summit, a pivotal event showcasing the airport’s commitment to driving innovation within the aviation industry. The summit, held at the airport’s STEM Centre, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including local and regional businesses, universities, the Civil Aviation Authority, Innovate UK, Chambers of Commerce, and multinational corporations. Over 50 entities participated, creating an atmosphere buzzing with collaboration and exploration of groundbreaking ideas.
David Gregory, Head of Smart Cities and Spaces at Nvidia, shared valuable insights, highlighting the potential of technology to transform the aviation landscape. Abhi Chacko, London Gatwick’s Head of Innovation, outlined the airport’s strategic approach to innovation and emphasized its partnerships with airlines and technology firms. He highlighted how these collaborations are fostering the development of novel concepts and solutions that aim to enhance passenger experiences and improve operational efficiency.
Representatives from VINCI, easyJet, and IAG also shared their industry expertise, contributing to a rich discussion on the future of aviation. The summit served as a platform for regional businesses to explore potential collaborative opportunities with London Gatwick, fostering a sense of community and a shared commitment to progress.
Abhi Chacko commented, “The Innovation Summit proved a fantastic opportunity for London Gatwick to collaborate with airlines and other partners across the industry, sharing progress and exploring new ideas to shape the future of aviation. We have a strong reputation in the industry for our innovative solutions to improve operational efficiency and enhance passenger experience.”

Chris Hurley, Director of Brighton-based company Airware, praised the summit, stating, “It was great to be at the first London Gatwick Innovation Summit and learn more about the different transformational solutions that are being developed and tested.”
He added, “London Gatwick has been an integral innovation partner and has enabled Airware to demonstrate the capabilities of our next generation of mobile passenger processing technologies to airports, airlines, ground handlers and other industry stakeholders from across the globe. With support from the innovation team, we have launched the solution in a live environment and continue to prove that new innovations start at Gatwick.”
London Gatwick, recognized as a center of excellence by VINCI Airports, is at the forefront of several innovative initiatives. These include application-based passenger processing, autonomous transport solutions, and live monitoring of airfields. One particularly noteworthy project is the Smart Stand initiative, a collaborative effort with easyJet. This pilot project aims to pioneer a new system where controllers can remotely oversee aircraft operations from a control center. If successful, this technology could significantly minimize flight delays and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
