Switzerland is taking another shot at hosting the Winter Olympics. After being passed over for the 2030 and 2034 Games, the country has received a renewed chance to bid for the 2038 event. The Swiss government, in a statement, expressed its support for the project, citing the potential positive impact on Swiss society, economy, and international reputation.
The government emphasizes that hosting the Winter Olympics and Paralympics would provide a significant opportunity for Switzerland to advance in areas like sports development, technological innovation, social cohesion, and its overall image. The Swiss Olympic Committee will take the lead in the bid preparation, identifying potential host sites and assessing the long-term implications of the Games for the country.
A dedicated interdepartmental working group, led by the Federal Office of Sport, will oversee the preparation process. Switzerland has a long history with the Winter Olympics, last hosting the Games in St. Moritz in 1948. Despite several attempts since then, the country has yet to secure another hosting opportunity. This new bid offers a fresh chance to showcase Swiss capabilities on the global stage and demonstrate the country’s commitment to sports and international collaboration.
