Blizzard, the studio behind iconic franchises like Warcraft and Diablo, is making a return to the StarCraft universe with a new first-person shooter. This news comes from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who revealed the project during a recent podcast appearance.
While details about the game are still under wraps, it’s being developed by Dan Hay, a veteran from Ubisoft and the Far Cry series. The game is reportedly in the early stages of development, with no confirmation on whether it will be a single-player, co-op, or competitive experience.
This isn’t the first time Blizzard has explored a shooter-focused spin-off for StarCraft. In the early 2000s, they canceled the stealth-action game StarCraft: Ghost, which was already in advanced development. Another project, a Battlefield-style shooter named Project Ares, was also scrapped. Apparently, the studio decided to focus on Overwatch instead.
Schreier emphasizes that this latest attempt is “interesting” because it highlights Blizzard’s continued interest in exploring the StarCraft universe with shooters. He even refers to this project as being in the “incubation” stage, implying a long path ahead and potential for cancellation.
Now that Blizzard is part of Microsoft, fans are cautiously optimistic. Perhaps this time will be different, especially with the recent success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. A third-person co-op shooter set in the StarCraft universe could be a compelling addition to the gaming landscape.
