The Virgin Islands has made a strategic appointment with the promotion of Ms. Sasha D. A. Flax to Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sustainable Development (MTC&SD). This appointment highlights the Virgin Islands’ commitment to fostering a thriving tourism sector while preserving its rich cultural heritage. Ms. Flax, a Virgin Gordian native, brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having held key positions in both the public and private sectors.
Her journey in public service began as the Sister Island Programme Coordinator from March 2019 to April 2023, where she dedicated her efforts to strengthening community relations and promoting engagement across the sister islands of Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost van Dyke. Her work focused on fostering resilience and implementing development projects tailored to the unique needs of each island. Prior to her new appointment, Ms. Flax served as Private Secretary to the Deputy Governor from May 2023 to August 2024. In this role, she played a pivotal role in managing the office’s operations and providing support to the Deputy Governor in administrative duties.
Beyond her public service experience, Ms. Flax brings valuable insights from the private sector. Her tenure as Operations Manager of The Rock Café, Club Ecstasy, and The Tree House Restaurant provided her with a deep understanding of business management and customer service within the tourism industry. This blend of public and private sector experience positions her well to contribute to the MTC&SD’s goals.
Ms. Flax’s academic credentials further solidify her qualifications. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University, she holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Travel-Tourism & Hospitality Management, providing her with the academic foundation to excel in her new role.
Her commitment to community and culture is evident through her active involvement in local initiatives. Ms. Flax coordinated events such as Christmas in Spanish Town and the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival. She also served as Chair of the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival Committee from 2014 to 2017, demonstrating her leadership in promoting cultural heritage and tourism.
In addition to her dedication to community and cultural preservation, Ms. Flax has served as President of the Civil Service Association since 2019, advocating for the rights and well-being of civil servants across the territory. Her appointment as Assistant Secretary in the MTC&SD arrives at a pivotal time, as the Virgin Islands continues to prioritize sustainable tourism practices that respect and celebrate the islands’ natural beauty and cultural richness.
