The German Travel Association (DRV) has expressed concerns over new tourism measures announced by the Greek government. These measures, aimed at fostering sustainable tourism, include increased climate resilience fees for hoteliers and a new levy on cruise passengers. While the DRV supports Greece’s commitment to sustainability, they fear the abrupt implementation of these fees could discourage German tourists from visiting.
In a letter addressed to Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, the DRV highlighted their apprehension that the sudden introduction of these costs could make other Eastern Mediterranean destinations more attractive due to the growing price sensitivity among German travelers and businesses. The association particularly worries about the impact on already booked trips, noting that travel agencies are unable to pass these sudden cost increases onto customers who have prepaid for their vacations.
DRV President Norbert Fiebig, who signed the letter, advocated for a phased introduction of these charges and requested special considerations for holiday packages booked for 2025. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the strong tourism ties between Germany and Greece, highlighting the successful 2024 summer season for German travelers in Greece. The DRV recognizes Greece’s high-quality tourism infrastructure, services, and hospitality, acknowledging Greece as a “reliable partner” in tourism. This relationship, they argue, contributes significantly to the positive experiences of German holidaymakers in Greece.
