Jessica, my 17-year-old daughter, was a whirlwind of energy and passion. She lived for sports, excelling in football and rugby, even playing for Warwickshire County Rugby and earning a spot at the RFU center of excellence. Her world, however, was shattered when she was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive brain tumor.
Jessica faced her diagnosis with an unyielding honesty that was typical of her neurodiversity. She calmly discussed her death, funeral arrangements, and even requested the song “Mr. Blue Sky” to be played at her memorial. Though devastating, her straightforward approach allowed her to confront her fears and leave her family with a sense of closure.
Despite multiple surgeries and the relentless progression of her illness, Jessica never lost her fighting spirit. Her unwavering love for sports and her desire to live life to the fullest were a constant source of inspiration. Sadly, she passed away in January 2021, leaving a void that could never be filled.
To honor Jessica’s memory and her passion for athletics, her family established “Jessica’s Promise.” This charity aims to support children and young people financially, enabling them to participate in amateur sports. Jessica, who struggled academically and socially, found true joy and success in the sporting arena. Her legacy is a testament to the power of sports to empower and inspire, and the charity ensures that other young athletes have the same opportunities that she cherished.
Jessica’s story is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. While her journey was cut tragically short, her spirit lives on through the lives she touched and the impact she continues to make through “Jessica’s Promise.”
