Goa, a state renowned for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, took a monumental step towards a sustainable tourism future on September 30th, 2024. The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, hosted the Yuva Tourism Clubs Meet at Darbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula, bringing together over 1000 students and youth representatives from across the state. The event, held in celebration of World Tourism Day, aimed to ignite a passion for sustainable tourism within the youth and empower them to become future leaders in the industry.
The gathering was graced by the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, and the Hon’ble Tourism Minister, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, along with esteemed dignitaries such as Secretary Tourism, Shri Sanjeev Ahuja, IAS, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of GTDC, Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, and President of the Travel and Tourism Association Goa (TTAG), Shri Jack Sukhija.
In his address, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte emphasized the crucial role of youth in shaping the future of tourism. He highlighted the Yuva Tourism Club’s inspiration from the Prime Minister’s vision of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which translates to “the world as one family,” promoting unity and peace through tourism. As India’s tourism landscape continues to evolve, Minister Khaunte urged young people to embrace this golden opportunity to become global ambassadors of change.
Shri Khaunte also elaborated on the initiatives launched by the Department of Tourism to celebrate World Tourism Day, with a focus on sustainable tourism practices. He introduced innovative tourism concepts to the youth, including regenerative tourism, the promotion of Ekadasha Teertha (eleven sacred pilgrimage sites), and showcasing Goa’s unique cultural heritage beyond its beaches.
Several Yuva Tourism Clubs received recognition for their exemplary contributions. Dnyanprassarak Vidyalaya was lauded as the first school to establish a Yuva Tourism Club, while Goa College of Home Science in Campal, Panaji, was acknowledged as the first college to do so. Bal Bharati Vidyamandir, Ribandar, was commended for its vibrant dance and music performances during the event. IITTM and IHM were also applauded for their activities related to the Yuva Tourism Clubs.
The event featured a thought-provoking session on “The Future of Tourism in Goa: Balancing Development and Sustainability,” led by Professor Ravindra Dogra from IITTM. The session encouraged insightful discussions on responsible tourism growth, prompting the youth to consider the environmental and cultural impact of tourism development.
During the proceedings, the Hon’ble Chief Minister and Hon’ble Minister for Tourism unveiled key initiatives, including the launch of the Yuva Tourism website, the Yuva Tourism Handbook, and the State-level Tourism Ambassador Program (beginner and advanced levels). These initiatives aim to empower young people and enhance their participation in the tourism sector.
Shri Deepak Narvekar, Deputy General Manager of GTDC, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the event’s success. A video showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Goa was screened, and participating students received branded t-shirts and caps to mark the occasion.
With over 150 schools and colleges having established Yuva Tourism Clubs, Goa is witnessing a surge in youth engagement in the tourism sector. These clubs, through various activities throughout the year, are not only fostering leadership skills but also instilling a profound sense of responsibility for environmental preservation and cultural heritage. The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, continues its efforts to engage the youth, ensuring that Goa remains at the forefront of sustainable tourism and serves as a model for environmental stewardship.
