In the wake of a deadly Israeli attack that claimed the life of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, stepped forward with a powerful message of defiance and resilience. In his first public address since the tragedy, Qassem declared Hezbollah’s unwavering readiness to confront Israel, warning of a protracted conflict and a potential ground incursion.
Qassem’s speech, delivered amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon, underscored Hezbollah’s determination to defend against what it perceives as Israeli aggression. He accused Israeli forces of committing atrocities against civilians, stating, “The US is a partner with Israel through unlimited military support – culturally, politically, financially.” He emphasized Hezbollah’s preparedness, declaring: “We are quite ready if the Israelis wanted ground incursion, the resistance forces are ready for that. We are prepared and ready. The Israeli enemy will not achieve its goals.”
While expressing deep sorrow for the loss of Nasrallah, whom he described as a “dear brother and a leader who loved the fighters for the faith,” Qassem highlighted Hezbollah’s ongoing military operations, asserting that the group has successfully targeted Israeli positions up to 150 km within Israel. He assured supporters that these operations have intensified since Nasrallah’s death, stating: “Hezbollah’s operations have continued at the same pace and more since Nasrallah’s killing. We will continue with our plan.”
Addressing the transition in leadership, Qassem revealed that Hezbollah will soon choose a new Secretary General, adhering to its established mechanism. He reiterated the group’s commitment to its primary objectives of supporting Gaza and safeguarding Lebanon, stating, “Hezbollah will continue with its main goals despite the aggressive attacks against civilians in Lebanon, and Israel’s aim of creating chaos.”
Qassem’s address was not only a testament to Hezbollah’s resolve but also an attempt to quell anxieties among its supporters, particularly regarding security in Beirut and its southern suburbs. He aimed to reassure them of the group’s ongoing military strength and resolve, insisting that: “We are prepared for Israel’s ground incursion and are also prepared for a long war.” He acknowledged the Israeli military’s consideration of a ground operation, but expressed confidence in Hezbollah’s capabilities, stating, “Hezbollah will have the upper hand when it comes to the ground; they also have a whole underground tunnel system, just like Hamas, that are potentially more sophisticated.”
Despite acknowledging recent challenges, Qassem reassured supporters that Hezbollah remains strong and intact, emphasizing resilience and readiness in his message, attempting to allay fears among those who see Hezbollah as a protector amidst escalating violence.
