RIU Hotels & Resorts is entering a new era under the leadership of Luis and Roberto Riu Rodríguez, the fourth generation of the family to helm the global hospitality giant. Having played integral roles in the company’s expansion for several years, the brothers are now taking the reins, bringing with them a fresh perspective and a commitment to upholding the company’s legacy of excellence.
Luis and Roberto, sons of Luis Riu Güell, have been deeply involved in the business for years. They spearheaded expansion projects, meticulously assessed investment opportunities, and steered the RIU Group’s Technical Advice Office (GAT), which oversees the design, construction, refurbishment, and outfitting of all new hotels. This hands-on approach, deeply ingrained in RIU’s DNA, ensures meticulous attention to detail and a consistent guest experience across all locations.
The brothers have proven their dedication to the business, having begun their careers working closely with their father. Now, they independently oversee various regions and projects, ensuring the continued active involvement of the Riu family in the company’s operations.
Beyond their commitment to the family legacy, Luis and Roberto are driving RIU’s forward-thinking decarbonization strategy. Their efforts focus on implementing self-sustaining energy systems across the company’s hotels, showcasing their commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. To date, they have overseen the design and installation of 24 solar energy projects at 23 hotels, representing an investment exceeding €8.6 million. These projects have successfully reduced CO2 emissions by over 7,375 tonnes, a significant contribution to the company’s environmental footprint.
Luis Riu Rodríguez, the elder brother, holds a degree in economics from the University of Kent and master’s degrees in economics and marketing from UCSB and EAE in Barcelona. His experience in investment banking at BBVA in London provides valuable insights that he brings to his role at RIU. He has been instrumental in managing projects in key destinations such as Miami, New York, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the Canary Islands. Luis also led the refurbishment of the Riu Buenavista and is the mastermind behind the RIU Party concept, an innovative entertainment experience first introduced in Mexico in 2018, which has since expanded to multiple destinations.
Roberto Riu Rodríguez, the younger brother, holds a business administration degree from IQS in Barcelona and a master’s degree in negotiation from IESEG School of Management in Paris. His experience with TUI Netherlands and internships across various departments at RIU hotels have equipped him with valuable practical experience. He has worked in hotel operations in Jamaica and Miami and played a pivotal role in the refurbishment of the Riu Palace Jandia, gaining valuable construction expertise.
Together, Luis and Roberto are leading RIU Hotels & Resorts into a future where sustainability and innovation are paramount. They are successfully balancing the company’s strong family tradition with a commitment to environmental responsibility, ensuring that RIU continues to thrive as a global hospitality leader for generations to come.
