Manchester City, the reigning Champions League champions, made a statement in their second group stage match, dismantling Slovan Bratislava with a convincing 4-0 victory. This win propelled City to four points after two games, having previously drawn with Inter Milan at home.
The match was a testament to City’s attacking prowess, as they relentlessly peppered Slovan’s goal with shots throughout the game. Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring in the eighth minute, his first goal since returning from Barcelona, with a deflected shot that left the Slovan goalkeeper helpless. Phil Foden doubled City’s lead in the 15th minute, showcasing his exceptional talent with a curling strike into the bottom corner.
Erling Haaland, the prolific striker, continued his goal-scoring spree, adding his 42nd goal in the Champions League to City’s tally in the 58th minute. He effortlessly outpaced the Slovan defense, received a pass from Rico Lewis, and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
Youngster James McAtee, making his mark on the game, scored his first ever goal for City in the 74th minute. He capitalized on a clever chipped pass from Foden to complete a truly dominant performance.
The game could have ended with an even greater scoreline as City registered a staggering 28 shots, 14 of which were on target. Despite Slovan’s valiant efforts, City’s dominance was undeniable.
“Got to give (Slovan) respect,” Foden acknowledged after the match. “It was difficult to break them down. The atmosphere was unbelievable. “We did the job at the end and we managed to find the space. On another night there could have been more goals, but we’re delighted with the 4-0. After the draw (with Inter) we had to get the win, so we’re on the right steps now.”
City’s victory showcases their continued dominance on the European stage, sending a clear message to their rivals.
