Sonamarg’s Tourism Boom: A 1800% Surge in Revenue and Growing Popularity

Nestled in the breathtaking Ganderbal district of central Kashmir, Sonamarg has emerged as a shining example of tourism growth in the region. Over the past five years, the number of visitors has exploded, soaring from 58,309 in 2019 to an impressive 661,539 in 2024, representing an incredible 11% increase in footfall. This surge in popularity has not only transformed Sonamarg into a must-visit destination but also yielded remarkable financial benefits.

The economic impact of this tourism boom is undeniable. Tourism revenue, which stood at a modest ₹1.63 lakh in 2020, has surged dramatically. By 2024, revenue reached a remarkable ₹30.68 lakh, demonstrating an impressive 1800% increase in just five years. This growth highlights the significant contribution of tourism to the local economy.

To manage the increased waste generated by the growing number of visitors, a state-of-the-art Solid Waste Management Plant was established in Sarbal, Sonamarg, in 2020. Equipped with advanced technology, including an electromagnetic disintegrator, a 5-MT auto insta-composter, and a segregator, the plant ensures the preservation of the region’s pristine beauty.

Accommodating the influx of tourists, Sonamarg currently offers 1,270 rooms across government and private accommodations, with additional camping sites developed to meet the rising demand. While the region has witnessed significant growth, there have been no new hostel registrations for the 2023-24 period, and the registration of horse riders and snow bikers remains under the oversight of the Department of Tourism.

The Department of Tourism has been proactive in enhancing the region’s tourism infrastructure, creating 25 tourism assets, 19 of which have already been outsourced. This ongoing development demonstrates a commitment to further bolster Sonamarg’s reputation as a premier destination for both adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. With its stunning landscapes, growing tourism facilities, and a proactive approach to sustainable development, Sonamarg is poised to become a leading travel destination in Kashmir, offering unforgettable experiences for all who visit.
