Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) has announced a recall affecting certain 2024 Cybertruck models. The recall encompasses roughly 27,185 Cybertrucks and stems from a delay in the rearview camera image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. This delay causes the Cybertrucks to potentially fail to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, which pertains to “Rear Visibility.” To rectify this issue, Tesla will implement a free over-the-air (OTA) software update. Owners are expected to receive notification letters by November 25th.
This recall adds to a growing list of issues that have plagued the Cybertruck since its inception. Earlier this year, Tesla issued recalls for over 11,000 Cybertrucks due to concerns that the vehicle’s “sail applique” could detach while driving. Additionally, nearly 12,000 Cybertrucks were recalled due to potential malfunctions with their windshield wipers. In April, Tesla recalled 3,878 Cybertrucks over concerns that the accelerator pedal could become dislodged and trapped, potentially leading to unintentional acceleration.
Despite these recalls, Tesla continues to expand its Cybertruck production and deliveries. The company recently began deliveries of the Cybertruck in Mexico, marking the first country outside the US to receive the stainless steel truck. Tesla’s third-quarter deliveries totaled 462,890 vehicles, representing a 6.4% increase year-over-year and a 4.3% increase quarter-over-quarter. Production for the same period reached 469,796 vehicles, up 9.1% year-over-year and 14.4% quarter-over-quarter.
TSLA shares closed down 2.31% on Thursday, trading at $243.26. This latest recall adds another layer of scrutiny to Tesla’s already tumultuous year, as the company faces mounting pressure to overcome production and quality control challenges while navigating a competitive electric vehicle market.
