Karnataka Cracks Down on Cancer-Causing Cake Additives

The Karnataka government has issued a stern warning to bakeries across the state after tests revealed the presence of potentially carcinogenic ingredients in cakes. Out of 235 cake samples tested, 12 were found to contain artificial colors such as Allura Red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine. These ingredients, commonly used to enhance the visual appeal of cakes like red velvet and black forest, have been linked to cancer and other serious health issues.

The Food Safety and Quality Department of Karnataka has emphasized that the levels of these additives found in the cakes exceeded the prescribed safety limits. They have highlighted the potential negative impacts on mental and physical health due to the overuse of these chemicals.

Following the discovery, the government has instructed bakeries to strictly adhere to safety standards and cease the use of these artificial colors. State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has warned bakeries and other outlets that failed the tests to comply with food safety and quality regulations. He has also stressed that severe actions will be taken against those who continue to disregard the rules.

This crackdown comes after the Food Safety Department previously banned the use of artificial colors in dishes like gobi manchurian, kebabs, and pani puri sauces. The government is taking a proactive stance to ensure the safety of food products and protect the health of its citizens. Consumers are advised to be vigilant about the ingredients used in food items and to choose products that prioritize natural ingredients over artificial additives.
