India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar embarked on a crucial visit to Sri Lanka on Friday, reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting the island nation’s economic recovery and strengthening bilateral ties. His visit comes just weeks after President Anura Kumara Dissanayake took office, making Jaishankar the first foreign dignitary to meet the new leader.
During his stay, Jaishankar held high-level meetings with key Sri Lankan officials, including President Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The discussions focused on deepening cooperation in areas such as tourism, energy, and investment, underscoring India’s active role in supporting Sri Lanka’s economic revival. Jaishankar conveyed warm greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations. He highlighted India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and development, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration in sectors like fisheries, security, and national unity.
Sri Lanka has been grappling with a severe economic crisis, culminating in its first sovereign default in 2022. India has been a key partner in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, providing significant financial assistance to help the island nation overcome its financial challenges. Jaishankar’s visit signifies India’s continued commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s economic stability and fostering a strong and collaborative relationship between the two countries.
