Rahul Gandhi Summoned Again in Defamation Case Over Savarkar Remarks

The legal troubles for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi continue to mount. After being summoned by a Nashik court in a defamation case related to alleged objectionable remarks against late freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Gandhi now faces another legal challenge in Pune.

A Pune court has issued summons to Gandhi in a separate defamation case filed by Satyaki Savarkar, a grandnephew of the late leader. Satyaki alleges that Gandhi made defamatory comments about Vinayak Savarkar during an event in London on March 5, 2023. The complaint, lodged with a Pune magistrate court in April 2023, accuses Gandhi of intentionally making “wild allegations” against Savarkar, knowing them to be untrue, with the aim of damaging his reputation.

The complaint further asserts that Gandhi’s remarks were specifically intended to “harm his reputation, defame the surname ‘Savarkar,’ and hurt the feelings of the late Savarkar’s family.” Satyaki has requested the court to impose the maximum punishment on Gandhi.

This summons comes shortly after a Nashik court issued a similar notice to Gandhi on September 27. The Nashik case was filed by the director of an NGO who alleged that Gandhi made defamatory remarks against Savarkar during a press conference in Hingoli and a speech in November 2022.

Gandhi is now required to appear before the Pune court on October 23 to face the charges against him. This latest development adds to the ongoing legal battles surrounding the Congress leader and further intensifies the political discourse around the legacy of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
