Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed arrived in Delhi on Sunday, marking the President’s first bilateral visit to India. The visit, scheduled from October 6 to 10, will see President Muizzu engage in meetings with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other high-ranking officials.
Upon arrival at the airport, President Muizzu was warmly welcomed by Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Kiriti Vardhan Singh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, expressed enthusiasm about the visit, stating, “A warm welcome to President Mohammed Muizzu of Maldives as he arrives in New Delhi on a State Visit to India. Received by MoS KV Singh at the airport. The visit will provide further boost to this long-standing India – Maldives comprehensive bilateral partnership.”
This visit holds significant importance, especially considering the recent tensions between the two South Asian neighbors. Earlier this year, President Muizzu’s demand for the removal of Indian troops deployed in the Maldives led to strained relations. After negotiations, the Indian troops were replaced by civilian personnel.
President Muizzu’s office, announcing the Delhi visit, emphasized his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with countries crucial to the Maldives’ development. The visit aims to bolster cooperation and strengthen the enduring relationship between the two nations.
Despite previous anti-Indian rhetoric, President Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, has softened his stance. He has declared that he will not disrupt the regional balance by replacing Indian forces with Chinese troops.
On the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, President Muizzu confirmed his intention to visit India as soon as possible, expressing optimism about the strong bilateral ties between the two countries. “I am planning to visit (India) as soon as possible…We have a very strong bilateral relationship,” he stated to ANI.
The Indian government remains vigilant about China’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean, making this visit a crucial step in strengthening India’s regional presence and partnership with the Maldives. The visit serves as a positive indication of both countries’ willingness to work towards mending their differences and fostering a strong bilateral relationship.
