Arsenal’s Women’s Super League title hopes took a hit on Sunday as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at home by Everton. This result marked Everton’s first point of the season and their first away victory against the Gunners since 2009.
Despite Everton’s dreadful start to the season, having suffered losses to Brighton & Hove Albion (4-0) and Manchester United (1-0), even the most ardent Toffees fans wouldn’t have predicted a point from their trip to London. Arsenal dominated possession, controlling almost 70% of the game, and created several decent chances on goal. However, Everton’s gritty determination and a touch of luck helped them secure an unlikely point that could have significant consequences in the tightly contested 22-game title race.
With Chelsea’s game against Manchester United postponed due to their Champions League match on Tuesday, Manchester City seized the opportunity to capitalize on Arsenal’s stumble. They comfortably defeated visiting West Ham 2-0, moving to the top of the table with seven points after three games.
Meanwhile, Liverpool secured their first league win of the season in dramatic fashion. They defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-2, thanks to two brilliant goals from Cornelia Kapocs, a lob, and Marie Hoebinger, a direct free kick. However, Liverpool also managed to put the ball in their own net twice before a stoppage-time penalty from Hoebinger sealed the victory.
On Saturday, Brighton continued their impressive start to the season by coming back from a goal down to defeat Aston Villa 4-2. Despite another impressive performance, Brighton’s joy was marred by Poppy Pattinson’s red card in stoppage time. This result places Brighton third in the table on six points, behind Chelsea on goal difference, with Manchester United fourth, also on six points, and Liverpool fifth on five.
Despite Everton’s unexpected draw, they remained at the bottom of the table after Crystal Palace defeated Leicester City 2-0 later on Sunday. This victory helped Crystal Palace climb to eighth place in the 12-team table, leapfrogging Everton. Aston Villa, Leicester, and West Ham remain on one point each, while Everton sits at the bottom without scoring a goal yet this season.
