Canada Nickel Secures $4.38 Million from Government of Canada for Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project

Canada Nickel Company Inc. has received a significant boost for its flagship Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project. The company announced today that it has been conditionally approved for a C$4.38 million contribution from Natural Resources Canada’s Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund (CMIF). This funding will support the company’s pre-construction and project development activities, particularly focusing on electrical infrastructure.

The pre-implementation studies, which began in April 2024, are expected to be completed by June 2025. These studies are crucial for both Canada Nickel and the Government of Canada as they aim to ensure the development of clean energy infrastructure that drives innovation within the mining sector.

Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel, expressed gratitude for the government’s contribution during this pivotal phase of the Crawford Project. He emphasized that the funding will enable the company to complete the necessary engineering and permitting processes, ultimately pushing the project towards construction.

Selby further highlighted the project’s positive economic and environmental impact. He stated that the federal government’s investment will support the development of sustainable infrastructure, guaranteeing a stable source of critical minerals. This, in turn, will foster economic growth, create over 1,500 high-paying jobs in the Timmins region, and advance Canada’s commitment to net-zero carbon targets.

Once operational, the Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to diesel-powered operations. This reduction will be achieved by utilizing Ontario’s clean electricity grid for its electrical infrastructure. Additionally, the project includes a permanent carbon storage component, positioning it as a potential net-zero contributor of CO2 throughout its lifespan. This aligns with Canada’s 2050 net-zero emissions target and broader environmental commitments.

The government’s contribution will cover a portion of the estimated C$9.6 million cost of the pre-implementation studies. Canada Nickel will contribute the remaining C$5.2 million. The contribution is subject to customary conditions, including confirmatory due diligence and the finalization of definitive documentation.

The Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project is poised to meet the growing global demand for nickel, solidifying Canada’s position as a reliable supplier of critical minerals. This project leverages the rich mining history and expertise of the Timmins region. Upon completion, the mine is expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs, driving economic growth for the region for years to come.

The Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund (CMIF) aims to provide up to C$1.5 billion in federal funding over seven years for clean energy and transportation infrastructure projects. The goal is to enable the sustainable development and expansion of critical minerals in Canada. Stream 1 of the CMIF, which funded the Crawford Project, focuses on supporting preconstruction activities, including studies, planning, design work, assessments, and community engagement, to ensure that projects are shovel-ready.

This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and responsible critical minerals sector in Canada. With the support of the CMIF, the Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project is well-positioned to make a significant contribution to the nation’s economic prosperity and environmental goals.
