Henry Cavill Piloting a Giant Robot in ‘Voltron’ Live-Action Adaptation

Henry Cavill, known for his roles as Superman and Geralt of Rivia, is trading in his cape for a giant robot. He’s set to star in the live-action adaptation of the iconic 1980s animated series, ‘Voltron,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is being directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for his collaborations with Dwayne Johnson on films like ‘Central Intelligence,’ ‘Skyscraper,’ and Netflix’s record-breaking ‘Red Notice.’ This news follows the announcement that Daniel Quinn-Toye, who understudied Tom Holland in the West End production of ‘Romeo & Juliet,’ has secured a starring role in the ‘Voltron’ cast.

‘Voltron’ is based on the original 1980s animated series from Toei Animation, produced by Peter Keefe and Ted Koplar of World Events Productions. The story follows five young pilots who command robotic lions, which combine to form the formidable Voltron. The original animated series was inspired by two Japanese mecha anime series: ‘Beast King GoLion’ and ‘Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.’ ‘Voltron’s’ popularity led to a host of spin-off series, comic books, video games, and a popular toy line.

Thurber wrote the ‘Voltron’ script with Ellen Shanman, but plot details are being kept under wraps. The project is being produced by Thurber, Hidden Picture, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman. This marks a new chapter for Cavill, who has recently starred in two 2024 films, ‘Argylle’ and ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.’ He also made a memorable cameo appearance as Wolverine, or as fans call him, the ‘Cavallrine,’ in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ The Man of Steel star completed his final season of ‘The Witcher,’ passing the mantle to Liam Hemsworth, and will star in Guy Ritchie’s ‘In the Grey,’ slated for release on January 17, 2025. Cavill is also set to headline Chad Stahelski’s ‘Highlander’ and star in and executive produce live-action adaptations of the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ video game franchise.
