Apple Debuts ‘Submerged’ – First Scripted Film For Vision Pro Headset

Apple has taken a bold leap into the future of filmmaking with the debut of ‘Submerged,’ the first scripted film specifically designed for its innovative Vision Pro headset. This immersive thriller, captured using Apple’s groundbreaking Immersive Video technology, transports viewers into the heart of a WWII-era submarine, placing them in the thick of the action.

Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Edward Berger, known for his powerful work on ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ ‘Submerged’ is a 17-minute experience that promises to redefine how we engage with stories. With a 180-degree view, viewers can explore their surroundings and follow the action wherever it unfolds. The story, a thrilling tale of survival and tension set against the backdrop of a harrowing attack, is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

“With ‘Submerged’ … we’re excited to premiere the next generation of narrative filmmaking,” said Apple executive Tor Myhren. “Vision Pro places you in the middle of the story — inside a densely packed submarine, shoulder to shoulder with its crew. That deep sense of immersion just wasn’t possible before, and we can’t wait to see how it inspires filmmakers to push the boundaries of visual storytelling.”

Berger himself praised Apple Immersive Video as “a wonderful new medium that expands the horizon of storytelling.” He believes the technology will “change the future of filmmaking,” paving the way for even more immersive and engaging experiences.

The production of ‘Submerged’ was as impressive as the film itself. Filmed on location in Prague, Brussels, and Malta over three weeks, the film utilized a full-scale 23-ton submarine set, constructed from real steel, brass, and metal. This meticulous attention to detail ensured an authentic experience for both viewers and actors, who underwent freedive training to prepare for their roles.

Apple is already looking to expand its Vision Pro content library with even more immersive experiences. They have announced plans to release an immersive short film of the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, and a Concert for One series designed to bring fans closer to their favorite artists than ever before. With its commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, Apple is clearly positioning the Vision Pro as a revolutionary platform for the future of entertainment.
