During a significant economic policy address in Detroit, former US President Donald Trump took aim at India’s tariff policies, claiming they are the highest among major nations. The Republican presidential hopeful vowed to introduce a system of reciprocal taxation if he were to win the upcoming US presidential election.
Trump, while emphasizing the US’s general lack of tariffs, asserted that he initiated a move toward imposing tariffs on vans and small trucks. He further alleged that China levies a 200 percent tariff, and Brazil also imposes high tariffs. However, it was India that received the brunt of Trump’s criticism, labeling it the ‘biggest charger’ of all.
Despite the strong criticism, Trump acknowledged the positive relationship between the US and India, commending Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and his efforts to unify the country. However, he maintained that India’s high tariffs are a significant issue and that his administration would address them if elected.
