Navi Mumbai Airport to be Named After Late Activist DB Patil

The new international airport in Navi Mumbai will honor former MP and activist DB Patil. This was announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a test flight at the airport on Friday. An Indian Air Force C-295 aircraft successfully landed at the Navi Mumbai International Airport, marking a key milestone in its development.

Developed by the Adani Group, the airport is expected to begin commercial operations early next year. Chief Minister Shinde expressed optimism about the project, stating, “We are prepared for both flight and challenges. Our actions speak for themselves. The Navi Mumbai Airport will be a significant asset for the community. Today, the C-295 landed safely at the airport, which will be named Loknete DB Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport.”

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the airport’s safety and security, noting, “The landing was on a secure runway. Initially, there were doubts from opposition leaders about the airport’s feasibility, but today’s successful landing proves otherwise. Commercial flights will start soon.”

DB Patil, a notable figure in Maharashtra’s political arena, was born in Raigad district in 1926. After earning his LLB degree in 1951, he entered politics, winning a seat in the Maharashtra Assembly from Panvel in 1957, where he served five terms until 1980. He was also an MP for Kolaba from 1977 to 1984. A key member of the Peasants and Workers Party, Patil championed farmers’ rights and led significant protests against land acquisition efforts in Panvel during the 1970s and 1980s. His legacy in Maharashtra’s political landscape remains strong due to his dedication to the welfare of farmers.
