Chennai Train Accident: 19 Injured, No Fatalities Reported

On October 10, 2023, a collision between the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express and a stationary goods train in Chennai led to the derailment of 12 to 13 coaches, injuring 19 passengers. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM at the Ponneri-Kavarappettai railway stations in the Chennai Division.

This accident caused major disruptions in train services, with numerous long-distance trains being either diverted or canceled. Among the affected services was the Jan Shatabdi Express, illustrating the widespread impact on rail travel.

Compounding the situation, a parcel van from the goods train caught fire following the collision. Reports indicate that the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express was traveling at approximately 75 km/h when it entered the loop line and collided with the rear of the stationary goods train.

Railway officials promptly initiated rescue operations for the affected passengers. A special train departed from Dr. MGR Chennai Central Railway Station at 4:45 AM to transport the stranded passengers of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express. Those impacted were provided with food and water, according to PTI.

Authorities confirmed that over 95% of passengers have been evacuated from the affected coaches, with no serious injuries or fatalities reported.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his concern, directing Minister for Minorities SM Nasar and other officials to the accident site. He voiced his shock over the incident and assured that government officials were actively working to assist those affected.

This accident underscores the critical importance of safety measures, and ongoing investigations aim to uncover the causes of the collision. Restoration work at the Ponneri-Kavarappettai railway stations is underway to bring the rail network back to normal.
