Tesla Inc’s Shanghai Gigafactory has reached a new production milestone, hitting 3 million vehicles manufactured. The electric vehicle giant made the announcement on Friday via the social media platform X, accompanied by a celebratory image of employees at the factory with a red Tesla car. This achievement signifies Tesla’s continued growth in the Chinese market and its commitment to global EV production.
The Gigafactory in Shanghai produces Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, catering to the Chinese market and exporting to various countries, including the UK. In September 2023, Tesla announced that the factory had produced its 2 millionth EV, showcasing a remarkable pace of production. Since then, the company has built an impressive 1 million vehicles in just 13 months. The factory, which began production in 2019, reached its first million vehicles in 33 months, demonstrating a significant ramp-up in production efficiency.
This news arrives at a crucial time for Tesla, as it recently reported producing more vehicles globally than it delivered in the third quarter. The company manufactured 469,796 vehicles in the three months ending in September, while delivering only 462,890 units. Notably, Tesla CEO Elon Musk informed his followers on X that the Shanghai factory is operating at full capacity. Tesla’s second-quarter shareholder report highlighted the factory’s annual production capacity, exceeding 950,000 vehicles, indicating a daily maximum capacity of approximately 2,603 vehicles.
This milestone also comes on the heels of Tesla exporting its one-millionth vehicle from the Shanghai factory. These achievements solidify Tesla’s presence as a major player in the global electric vehicle market, showcasing the company’s impressive growth and manufacturing capabilities.
