Burkina Faso has made history by becoming the first team to secure a place in the 2025 African Cup of Nations finals. They achieved this feat with a dominant 2-0 win against Burundi on Sunday, solidifying their position in the 24-team tournament.
The victory was powered by goals from Mohamed Konate and Bertrand Traore, who converted a penalty. This result propelled Burkina Faso to 10 points from four games in Group L, ensuring their qualification regardless of the outcome of their remaining matches.
Senegal currently sits in second place within the group with seven points from three games. They are on track to also secure a spot in the finals, needing only a win in their upcoming match against Malawi on Tuesday. Burundi, on the other hand, has three points from four games, while Malawi remains winless in their three matches.
The top two teams in each of the 12 qualifying pools will advance to the finals, scheduled to take place from December 21, 2024, to January 18, 2026. An exception exists in Morocco’s Group B, where only one additional team will qualify alongside the hosts. Gabon, Central African Republic, and Lesotho are the other contenders in that group.
