A heartbreaking tragedy struck Lawrence Township, New Jersey on Monday afternoon, claiming the life of a 12-year-old boy. The incident occurred around 12:09 p.m. when the boy was playing with a friend in his backyard on the 100 block of Eldridge Avenue.
According to a statement released by the Lawrence Township Police Department, officers responded to a report of a fallen tree that had struck a young boy. Upon arrival, officers were able to free the child from under the tree and immediately began CPR. Despite their best efforts, the boy succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Capital Health System – Regional Medical Center.
Investigation into the accident revealed that strong gusts of wind caused the tree to topple over, striking the boy and causing fatal injuries. The Lawrence Township School District has mobilized resources to support students and staff in the wake of this devastating loss. Grief counselors, therapy dogs, and members of the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition will be available on school grounds to provide assistance.
