Bahraich Violence: Suspect Shot Dead, Internet Restored, and Police Warn Against Rumors

The investigation into the violent clashes in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, took a dramatic turn on Thursday with the death of one of the suspects. Sarfaraz, a prime suspect, was shot dead by police while attempting to escape to Nepal along with another suspect, Talib, who was also injured in the incident. The violence, which erupted on Sunday during a Durga Puja immersion procession, stemmed from an argument over loud music being played near a place of worship. The incident resulted in the death of 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra due to gunshot wounds.

The violence spiraled out of control, leading to widespread vandalism and arson. Mobs torched houses, shops, hospitals, and vehicles, creating a climate of fear and unrest in the area. The police have apprehended 55 suspects in connection with the violence and have filed multiple FIRs.

To restore peace and normalcy, heavy security has been deployed in the town. After four days of internet suspension, services were finally restored on Thursday. The decision to restore internet services came as a relief to the business community, which had suffered significant losses due to the shutdown. Mandal Deepak Soni, President of the UP Udyog Vyapar Manadal, Bahraich chapter, emphasized the crucial role internet plays in modern business, stating that even small traders rely on online payment systems.

Despite the restoration of normalcy, the police remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation and rumors. Additional Superintendent of Police Pavitra Mohan Tripathi issued a stern warning against the dissemination of false information, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communal harmony. In a video message, he refuted several rumors circulating on social media, stating that the deceased was not electrocuted, attacked with a sword, or had his nails pulled out. He reiterated that the post-mortem report confirmed the cause of death as gunshot wounds and there were no other fatalities.

The authorities are working tirelessly to restore peace and order in the area, while urging the public to rely on credible information sources and avoid spreading unsubstantiated rumors.
