Richard Branson to Co-Pilot Space Perspective’s First Crewed Stratospheric Balloon Flight

Get ready for a breathtaking journey into the stratosphere! Richard Branson, the adventurous founder of Virgin Galactic, is set to take on a new challenge: co-piloting Space Perspective’s inaugural crewed flight of its stratospheric balloon. This ambitious project, slated for launch next year, aims to redefine space tourism with a gentle, luxurious experience unlike anything currently available.

Branson, a veteran of record-breaking hot-air balloon flights across the Atlantic and Pacific three decades ago, is no stranger to high-altitude adventure. This time, he’ll be joining Space Perspective founders Taber MacCallum and Jane Poynter as co-pilots aboard the Spaceship Neptune balloon.

“Some of the most magnificent experiences of my life have happened on ballooning expeditions, and I’m excited to support Space Perspective in its journey,” Branson shared, reflecting on his past experiences and passion for pushing boundaries. “I’m passionate about adventure and helping fellow entrepreneurs reach their business dreams. I look forward to dusting off my old ballooning license ahead of some magnificent test flights.”

Space Perspective’s innovative approach sets it apart from other space tourism ventures like Blue Origin’s New Shepard and Branson’s own Virgin Galactic. While those experiences rely on rocket power to reach the edge of space, Space Perspective opts for a slower, gentler ascent powered by hydrogen. The pressurized capsule will carry up to eight passengers on a six-hour journey to an altitude of 20 miles, offering unparalleled views of Earth against the backdrop of space.

Unlike other space tourism options, Space Perspective’s journey is devoid of the intense g-forces and weightlessness often associated with rocket-powered flights. Passengers will enjoy a serene ascent and descent, with no rigorous training required.

“Richard’s pioneering efforts in the ballooning industry were a key inspiration for us when we founded Space Perspective,” said Jane Poynter, emphasizing the influence of Branson’s experience on the company’s vision. “We are now on a mission to give explorers breathtaking views of the Earth against a black sky, and do so gently in a way that only balloons enable.”

With tickets priced at $125,000 per person, Space Perspective is catering to a discerning clientele seeking a truly unique and unforgettable experience. The company’s successful uncrewed test flight last month demonstrated the feasibility of its technology, paving the way for the first crewed flight next year. The world eagerly awaits the launch of this revolutionary space tourism venture, promising to redefine how we explore the wonders beyond our planet.
