Germany Confirms UK Leading Eurofighter Jet Deal With Turkey, Project in Early Stages

Amidst ongoing tensions, Germany has confirmed that Britain is taking the lead in a potential deal to supply Turkey with Eurofighter jets. The news comes after months of back-and-forth between the involved parties, with Germany initially expressing reservations about the deal.

During a joint press conference with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz acknowledged that the project, while still in its early stages, is being pushed forward primarily by Britain. This confirmation sheds light on the current state of affairs, following Turkey’s repeated expressions of frustration over the perceived lack of progress.

Last year, Ankara expressed interest in acquiring Eurofighter Typhoons from Britain and Spain. However, Germany’s opposition to the deal posed a significant hurdle, with Turkey hinting at Berlin’s reluctance. Despite these past difficulties, both Turkey and Germany have expressed a desire to improve their cooperation in the defense industry.

Recently, a Turkish defense ministry official revealed that technical work is underway to accelerate the planned purchase of the jets. This signals Turkey’s determination to move forward with the acquisition, despite the ongoing negotiations.

The Eurofighter Typhoon, a joint venture between Germany, Britain, Italy, and Spain, is a highly advanced combat aircraft. Its development and production are managed by a consortium comprising Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo. The outcome of the potential deal remains uncertain, but the involvement of Britain as the driving force suggests a renewed push to finalize the agreement.
