Scotland’s Tourism Boom: North American Travelers Fuel Record-Breaking Growth in 2024

Scotland’s tourism industry is on a roll in 2024, experiencing a remarkable surge in international visitors and spending. According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Scotland welcomed 1.975 million international tourists between January and June, a staggering 14% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth is even more impressive when compared to 2019, with a 46% jump in visitor numbers.

This influx of tourists has also translated into a significant boost to the Scottish economy. International tourists spent an estimated £1.5 billion in Scotland during the first half of 2024, a 2% increase from 2023 and a 30% growth from 2019 after adjusting for inflation.

One of the key drivers of this positive trend is the surge in North American travelers. Visitor numbers from North America have skyrocketed by 54% compared to 2023, and are 69% higher than in 2019. This robust growth is reflected in spending as well, with North American tourists increasing their spending by 29% from 2023 and 48% from 2019, once inflation is taken into account.

These numbers highlight Scotland’s success in attracting tourists from key markets like North America. The country’s stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture continue to captivate visitors, driving its tourism industry to new heights. As Scotland continues to invest in tourism infrastructure and experiences, it is poised to maintain this momentum and attract even more visitors in the years to come.
