Karwa Chauth Tragedy: Woman Kills Husband After Fast, Rajasthan Woman Dies by Suicide in Similar Incident

The festive spirit of Karwa Chauth, a Hindu festival where wives fast for their husbands’ well-being, took a dark turn in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, leaving two families in mourning. In a shocking incident in Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh, a woman allegedly poisoned her husband after finishing her Karwa Chauth fast, citing suspicions of an affair.

The victim, 32-year-old Shailesh Kumar, was poisoned by his wife Savita, as reported by NDTV. The incident occurred in the Kada Dham police station area on Sunday. While Savita fasted for Shailesh’s long life as part of the Karwa Chauth ritual, tensions escalated in the evening after she broke her fast. A heated argument ensued between the couple, but things seemingly calmed down. However, tragedy struck later that night. After sharing a meal, Savita asked Shailesh to fetch something from a neighbor’s house, and then fled.

Shailesh’s brother, Akhilesh, rushed him to the hospital, but he succumbed to the poison during treatment. Before his death, Shailesh managed to record a video declaration accusing Savita of poisoning him. Based on the evidence, the police arrested Savita.

Kaushambi Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Shrivastava stated, “The crime was reported from Ismailpur village. The woman allegedly poisoned her husband after they had a fight. The man died during treatment. A case has been registered, the woman has been arrested, and the body has been sent for a post-mortem.”

In a separate, equally tragic incident, a woman in Rajasthan took her own life after a heated argument with her husband over his late return home on Karwa Chauth. The incident took place in the Harmara area on Sunday. The woman, identified as Mona (35), jumped in front of a moving train in a fit of rage.

Her husband, Ghanshyam Bunkar (38), devastated by the incident, hanged himself in shock. The news of these two tragedies has sent shockwaves through the communities and highlights the darker side of a festival meant to celebrate love and marital bonds.

Both cases underline the importance of addressing domestic violence and the need for open communication and conflict resolution within relationships. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of unresolved disputes and the need for greater support for individuals struggling in their relationships.
