PM Modi Embarks on Two-Day Visit to Russia for BRICS Summit, Aims to Strengthen Multilateralism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. The trip, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, marks PM Modi’s second visit to Russia this year, following a bilateral summit in Moscow in July. His July visit marked his first foreign trip after assuming office for his third consecutive term as Prime Minister.

This year’s BRICS Summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” will see India actively participate in discussions on a wide range of global issues. In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for extensive discussions and meetings with various leaders during the summit.

India attaches significant importance to BRICS, viewing it as a critical platform for dialogue and collaboration on key global concerns, including the global developmental agenda, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, and building resilient supply chains. The BRICS Summit will focus on bolstering multilateralism and fostering a more equitable and just global order.

During his visit, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other BRICS member nations, including a crucial discussion with President Putin on the conflict in Ukraine. The summit’s expansion last year, which welcomed Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as new members, reflects the growing influence and inclusivity of the grouping.

PM Modi highlighted the significance of India’s close cooperation within BRICS and emphasized that his visit will further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. The summit comes at a pivotal time as BRICS strives to further its agenda for global good and address pressing global challenges through collaboration and shared goals.
