The eastern coast of India is bracing for the impact of Cyclone Dana, with both West Bengal and Odisha taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of their residents. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the closure of all state-run schools in nine south Bengal districts, including Kolkata, from October 23 to 26. This decision comes as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 23, potentially making landfall along the Odisha and West Bengal coasts on October 24.
In preparation for the impending cyclone, the West Bengal government has stocked relief materials and prepared cyclone shelters in coastal areas. Additionally, the government has deployed principal secretaries from various departments to oversee the situation in the affected districts. These officials will monitor the situation and remain in their respective districts until the cyclone has passed.
Beyond school closures, the West Bengal government is taking further precautions, including the closure of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centres and a halt to tourism activities in coastal towns. Fishermen who were venturing into the Bay of Bengal have been ordered to return to shore.
Odisha, meanwhile, is implementing similar measures to prepare for the approaching cyclone. Schools in 14 districts will be closed from Wednesday to Friday, and fishermen have been advised to stay ashore. Tourists and pilgrims frequenting the coastal city of Puri, home to the famous Jagannath temple, have been asked to leave, and rescue teams are on standby.
The IMD’s Director General, Mrutunjay Mohapatra, has stated that the entire eastern coast, from Puri to the West Bengal coast, is expected to be impacted by Cyclone Dana. The depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to evolve into a severe cyclonic storm and cross the Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island in the early hours of October 25. The IMD predicts wind speeds of 100-110 kmph with gusts reaching 120 kmph.
As Cyclone Dana approaches, both states are prioritizing public safety by taking preemptive measures and urging residents to stay informed about the evolving situation. Authorities will continue to monitor the storm’s path and provide updates as necessary.
