Germany Sees Surge in Indian Tourists, Aiming for 1 Million Overnight Stays in 2025

Germany is witnessing a remarkable surge in Indian tourists, signaling a strong rebound from the pandemic and solidifying its position as a popular European destination for Indian travelers. The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) reports a substantial 33% year-on-year increase in overnight stays by Indian tourists, with over 232,000 visitors in 2023 contributing to a total of 826,000 overnight stays. This growth surpasses the recovery pace observed in other Asian markets, highlighting the appeal of Germany among Indian travelers.

The momentum continues into 2024, with an estimated 175,000 Indian tourists contributing to 523,076 overnight stays between January and July. These figures reflect a positive trajectory, leading the GNTB to project an ambitious target of exceeding 1 million overnight stays by Indian visitors in 2025.

Germany’s appeal to Indian tourists is evident in its significant market share in Europe. In 2023, Germany captured over 10% of the Indian travel market in Europe, ranking as the third most popular destination after the United Kingdom and France. Indian visitors contributed nearly 1 billion euros in revenue last year, highlighting the economic impact of this growing tourist segment.

The average Indian tourist spends about 9.3 days in Germany, often opting for round trips and staying for more than four nights. This extended stay duration underscores the appeal of Germany’s diverse offerings, catering to various travel interests.

Germany’s commitment to attracting Indian tourists is reflected in its strategic initiatives. The country is poised to reintroduce the India Pool initiative in 2025, a program designed to enhance its visibility and appeal as a top travel destination among Indian travelers.

Furthermore, the number of flights between India and Germany has witnessed a significant 25% increase in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2019. This expansion in air connectivity further facilitates travel accessibility and encourages more Indian tourists to explore Germany’s cultural and historical richness.

Recognizing the diverse needs of Indian travelers, the German Tourism Board is implementing targeted campaigns to attract niche markets, including Indian weddings, while also appealing to tech-savvy travelers through initiatives like the “Live Like a Local” project.

Through these efforts, Germany is positioning itself as a leading European destination for Indian tourists, capitalizing on India’s expanding outbound travel market and its growing appetite for diverse travel experiences. The country’s strategic focus on the Indian market, coupled with its attractive offerings, suggests that this positive trend is poised to continue, further strengthening the bond between India and Germany in the realm of tourism.
