Rejina Pyo, the renowned London-based designer, has chosen to celebrate her eponymous brand’s 10th anniversary with an extraordinary art exhibition instead of a traditional runway show. Titled ‘As She Is,’ this powerful showcase features the works of 19 female artists, reflecting Pyo’s deep appreciation for artistic expression and her dedication to highlighting the voices of women.
“I’m not a person who can do things when I’m not excited about it; it has to be aligned with my heart,” Pyo shared with Vogue, explaining her decision to curate this unique exhibition. “When we were talking about what has inspired me over the years, it just really spoke to me to share these amazing women doing incredible work all around the world.”
The exhibition itself is a testament to the strong relationships Pyo has cultivated within the art world. She managed to gather an impressive roster of artists, including Ángela de la Cruz, Chantal Joffe, Nengi Omuku, and Rachel Cusk, who generously agreed to display their works together. “My friend who’s worked at big Mayfair galleries said it’s crazy how all these people have said yes,” Pyo remarked, highlighting the remarkable feat of bringing such diverse and acclaimed talents together. “Some of the artists I’ve admired for a long time; sometimes I’ve got to meet them, and have more of a deep conversation about each other’s practice, and what we are going through.”
Many of the artworks delve into themes of womanhood and motherhood, concepts that have long been central to Pyo’s brand identity. A striking example is Joffe’s nude self-portrait, while Cusk’s recording of ‘The Stuntman’, originally published in the New Yorker, offers a poignant reflection on these themes. As Pyo explains, “The aim is celebrating all different types of experiences. All these life experiences that come out in these different mediums; I find that so fascinating.”
For the first time, Pyo included one of her own paintings, entitled ‘The Ruler’, in the exhibition. This powerful artwork depicts the stringent law in Korea during the 1970s that prohibited women from wearing skirts that ended 20 centimeters above the knee. “I’ve been painting for a long time,” Pyo shared. “It’s funny because these days, I think people are really afraid of doing something different. You’re known for one thing, and then you kind of have to stay in your box. At some point, you have to have self-belief that, ‘Okay, you can do this.’ I thought [the painting] was the right fit for the show.”
The profound influence of Pyo’s own mother, a designer and collector in her own right, is evident throughout the exhibition. Pyo included her mother’s collection of objects, furniture, and art from South Korea, creating a tangible connection to her heritage and the inspiration that shaped her own artistic vision. “Immediately, when the objects arrived, I felt like part of my home and my mother had arrived in London,” Pyo reflects, underscoring the powerful emotional resonance of the exhibition.
While no clothing is on display, Pyo’s signature Greta dress and other pieces have become popular amongst the art set, further strengthening the connection between her brand and the world of art. The designer’s decision to celebrate her 10th anniversary with this unique exhibition is a testament to her unwavering commitment to authenticity and her desire to connect with audiences on a deeper level.
Since stepping away from London Fashion Week in 2022, Pyo has carved her own path, prioritizing genuine connection and creative exploration. “I felt I’d rather connect directly with more people, than spend all this energy, time and effort [for a] 10-minute show one season,” she explains. “The biggest learning [has been] whatever you do, you have to do it in the most authentic, genuine way.”
As for the future, Pyo is eager to continue her collaborative approach, as seen in her recent partnership with Mulberry. She is also intrigued by exploring other creative avenues, including lifestyle and food. “I’m a very curious person; I don’t want to be doing the same thing over and over again,” she reveals. “Watch this space and see what happens.”
‘As She Is’ runs at Soho Revue from 23 October to 2 November, promising a captivating journey through the creative visions of talented female artists and a testament to Rejina Pyo’s unique approach to celebrating her brand’s milestone.
