Indian Olympic Association Postpones Crucial SGM Amidst Internal Power Struggle

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has thrown a curveball into the already tumultuous landscape of Indian sports, postponing its crucial Special General Meeting (SGM) indefinitely. The meeting, originally scheduled for October 25th, was called to address a multitude of contentious issues that have plunged the organization into a state of internal turmoil. The postponement, announced by IOA director George Mathew, came as a direct directive from the under-fire President, P.T. Usha.

Usha’s leadership has been under intense scrutiny in recent months, with a majority of the Executive Council (EC) accusing her of mismanaging the association’s affairs. The brewing power struggle has been particularly pronounced in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the Indian contingent’s preparations for the prestigious event.

The SGM was intended to tackle several contentious issues, chief among them the appointment of CEO Raghuram Iyer. This appointment has sparked fierce resistance from EC members who question Iyer’s qualifications and the hefty pay package offered to him. The controversy surrounding Iyer’s appointment has been amplified by concerns over his suitability for the position, particularly given the organization’s ongoing financial challenges.

Adding to the already complex situation are accusations of corruption against treasurer Sahdev Yadav, further straining relations within the IOA. The SGM was also expected to address the alleged ineligibility of certain EC members, who stand accused of violating the National Sports Code’s provisions regarding age and tenure limits for office-bearers.

The postponement of the SGM signals a deepening rift within the IOA and adds another layer of uncertainty to the organization’s future. With the Paris Olympics looming, the IOA’s ability to navigate its internal strife and ensure smooth preparations for the Games remains a pressing concern. The postponement raises questions about the organization’s commitment to resolving the pressing issues that threaten to derail the future of Indian sports.
