My Marathon Prep: Finding the Perfect Running Kit for Long Distances

Running has been a constant in my life since I was 15, but marathons? Not so much. Sure, a few bucket list races were on my radar, but I never considered myself a ‘trainer.’ Running was simply my way of being. Then, New Balance invited me to participate in the New York City Marathon this year, a race that had always been on my bucket list. I was ecstatic!

Having run only one marathon a decade ago, a familiar mix of dread and excitement washed over me, but it also brought a sense of opportunity. An opportunity to re-evaluate my relationship with running, to push my limits, and to shake things up. This wasn’t just about devising a new training schedule; it was about transforming my running wardrobe too.

My focus narrowed to the minute details: the perfect amount of cushioning in socks and shoes for those 10+ mile runs, the most convenient way to carry water and energy chews (without resorting to a bulky vest), and the elusive diagonal striped T-shirt that seemed to be every runner’s uniform, from Williamsburg to Prospect Park. (I’m still searching for that last one, though I discovered the easiest way to carry hydration is to have someone else do it—and that T-shirt? It’s by Tracksmith!)

Just as a stylish outfit can elevate your street-wear game, observing other runners’ clothing choices and accessories became a fascination. I found myself meticulously analyzing each piece, from head to toe. I consulted friends, coworkers, experts, and even spent a concerning amount of time watching running-related YouTube and Instagram videos. It was like a personal fashion investigation!

Much of my training kit is comprised of essentials I already used for shorter runs—leggings, sports bras, sneakers I loved—but there were definitely new additions to help conquer those longer miles. Let’s take a look at what made the cut:

Shoes:

I opted for a shoe with plenty of cushioning for the extra miles. I experimented with different brands and models to find the perfect balance of support and responsiveness.

Socks:

Forget your everyday socks! For marathon training, you need socks designed specifically for running. The right socks will provide cushioning, moisture-wicking, and blister prevention, crucial for those long, sweaty miles.

Hydration:

The key to staying hydrated during a marathon is having a reliable hydration system. I went with a lightweight handheld water bottle that fit comfortably in my hand, allowing me to easily sip water as I ran.

Apparel:

My training wardrobe included a mix of moisture-wicking shirts and shorts that helped regulate my body temperature. I also added a windbreaker for those chilly mornings and evenings.

Accessories:

A few accessories helped me stay focused and organized on my runs. I used a running belt to hold my phone, keys, and energy gels, and a cap for sun protection on those long runs.

This journey of finding the perfect running kit for marathon training has been as rewarding as the training itself. It’s been a process of discovery, exploration, and learning—just like running itself. I’ve learned that finding the right gear is not just about performance; it’s about finding the pieces that make you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to take on any challenge.
