LNER and National Railway Museum Spark Future Rail Visions with Youth Competitions
Get ready to board the train of imagination! LNER and the National Railway Museum are launching two special competitions to inspire young people to dream big about the next 200 years of rail travel. As we approach the bicentenary of the railway in 2025, these competitions are designed to ignite creativity and spark a passion for the future of transportation.
Design the Railway of Tomorrow
For youngsters up to age 11, there’s an opportunity to design a futuristic railway uniform. Imagine the sleek, innovative attire that future railway workers might wear, from conductors and engineers to emerging roles in the ever-evolving rail landscape. The winning design will be brought to life by LNER’s uniform supplier, Dimensions, and the lucky winner will receive First Class LNER tickets for themselves and their family.
Visualize the Train of the Future
Teenagers aged 12 to 17 are challenged to envision a train that redefines travel. This competition invites participants to design both the exterior and interior of their dream train, taking into account practical considerations and technological advancements. The winner will embark on an exclusive experience with LNER’s Azuma trains, including a thrilling journey in the driver’s cab and a visit to the driving simulator. First Class LNER tickets for the winner and their family are also part of the prize.
A Journey into the Future of Rail
Participants are encouraged to think beyond the present and explore the many ways the railway and the world will transform over the next two centuries. Designs should showcase how the future of rail can meet the needs of customers, communities, and the planet. These competitions are part of the Railway 200 program, a year-long celebration commemorating the birth of the modern railway in 1825.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Rail Leaders
Linda Wain, Engineering Director at LNER, emphasizes the importance of looking ahead and exploring ways to make rail travel more sustainable and enjoyable. She sees these competitions as a fantastic platform to witness the creative visions of young people and potentially discover future rail engineers.
Andrew McLean, Assistant Director and Head Curator of the National Railway Museum, shares the sentiment, stating that the museum is committed to showcasing railway history while inspiring the next generation of innovators. They eagerly anticipate the creative designs and ideas that will emerge from these competitions as we look towards the next 200 years of rail.
