Malaysia’s vibrant tourism scene took center stage at the recent Tourism Expo Japan 2024, with the nation’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, represented by Tourism Malaysia, showcasing the country’s diverse and captivating offerings to a global audience. The Malaysian delegation, led by Deputy Secretary-General of Tourism, Yasmeen Yasim, and Tourism Malaysia Director General, Manoharan Periasamy, comprised 15 delegates from eight organizations, including state tourism boards, airlines, tour operators, and tourism associations, all eager to showcase Malaysia’s tourism prowess.
At the expo, Tourism Malaysia unveiled two exciting new niche packages designed to appeal to discerning travelers seeking unique experiences. The Edu+ (Edutourism) package provides opportunities for experiential learning and cultural exchange, while the Unimaginable Golf Packages offer a chance to experience world-class golfing in Malaysia’s picturesque settings. These new packages are indicative of Malaysia’s commitment to expanding its tourism offerings beyond traditional sightseeing and cater to the growing demand for specialized travel experiences.
Malaysia’s tourism sector has witnessed a remarkable recovery following the pandemic, achieving a significant milestone with 20.1 million international tourist arrivals in 2023, generating RM71.3 billion in tourism revenue, surpassing the initial target of 16.1 million visitors. Building on this momentum, Malaysia has set ambitious goals for 2024, aiming to attract 27.3 million tourists and generate RM102.7 billion in tourism revenue.
Looking ahead, the highly anticipated Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign is projected to draw in a record 35.6 million international visitors, generating a projected RM147.1 billion in tourism earnings. This campaign underscores Malaysia’s dedication to positioning itself as a leading tourism destination and its unwavering commitment to growing the tourism sector.
The Malaysia Pavilion, a striking 90 square meter space in East Hall 3, served as a vibrant showcase for Malaysia’s premier travel products, destinations, and services. Officially inaugurated by Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, Malaysia’s Ambassador to Japan, the pavilion featured an array of engaging activities. Visitors were treated to a special stage performance by Mechamato, a presentation from the Sabah Tourism Board highlighting the region’s natural wonders, and captivating cultural performances showcasing Malaysia’s rich heritage. A Malaysian food talk show provided insights into the nation’s diverse culinary scene, while a traditional sape performance offered a glimpse into Malaysia’s indigenous musical traditions. AirAsia, a major Malaysian airline, also participated with an engaging dance and talk show, further amplifying Malaysia’s presence at the expo.
Tourism Expo Japan has historically provided a valuable platform for networking and exploring collaborative opportunities with key players in the Japanese tourism market. The 2024 expo was no exception, allowing Malaysia to strengthen its international presence and promote the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
