This bold initiative, announced by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, signals a significant shift towards modernizing traffic management and ensuring greater compliance.
The government’s vision involves utilizing AI and other innovative methods to accurately assess traffic violations and levy penalties. This technology-driven approach is expected to address longstanding concerns about fairness and transparency in the system.
Furthermore, the proposed use of AI extends beyond traffic violations. Gadkari revealed plans to revolutionize toll collection by exploring satellite-based systems, aiming to improve efficiency and transparency. He emphasized the government’s commitment to seeking out the best solutions, regardless of the source, by forming an expert committee to evaluate proposals from startups and industry leaders.
During his address at the 12th edition of the Traffic InfraTech Expo, Gadkari strongly advocated for integrating advanced engineering solutions, enforcing traffic laws, and leveraging cutting-edge technologies like AI to achieve meaningful road safety. He stressed the importance of collaboration with the private sector, highlighting the government’s plan to appoint experts to contribute to developing technological solutions. The committee, tasked with evaluating these solutions, aims to finalize its recommendations within three months, promising swift improvements in the sector.
In a clear demonstration of their commitment to quality, Gadkari assured that standards would not be compromised, regardless of the size or origin of the solutions. He also encouraged participation from small firms, particularly those with innovative technologies, in government tenders.
This proactive approach is fueled by the alarming statistics surrounding road accidents in India. The country faces an average of 5 lakh accidents annually, resulting in a significant number of fatalities, particularly among individuals aged 18-36 years. The economic burden of road accidents is estimated at 3% of the country’s GDP.
